How to Deploy a Crab Trap Correctly

Knowing how to deploy a crab trap the right way can be the difference between a full pull and an empty one. A good trap helps, but placement, bait, and how you set it matter just as much.
Crab Trap Placement and Location
Start with crab trap placement near structure and travel routes—docks, bridges, channel edges, oyster bottom, and shallow flats. If possible, scout at low tide to spot bottom changes and structure that crabs use for cover.
Best Bait for Crab Trap Deployment
For effective crab trap deployment, use strong-smelling bait like cut fish, fish heads, chicken, or bait bags. Secure bait in the bait well so it lasts longer and keeps pulling scent through the soak.
All of our OceanBuilt traps include a full length, heavy duty baitwell to ensure your trap stays baited longer.

Depth, Soak Time, and Trap Orientation
When deploying, lower the trap gently to avoid flipping. Orient entrances toward the current so the scent trail flows downstream. Soak time can range from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on tides and activity—checking too late can mean washed-out bait or escapes.
Marking and Securing Your Crab Trap
Use a visible buoy and the right length of rope for your water depth and tide swing. This helps prevent lost gear and keeps your setup compliant with local regulations.

Compliance Note: Always confirm your trap setup meets local and state fishing regulations.
