Blue Crab Trap - Quick Start Guide
1) Check Your Local Laws
Before you set any trap, confirm your local and state regulations (trap type, escape requirements, marking rules, soak limits, seasons, etc.). Regulations vary by location and can change.
2) Mark & Secure Your Trap
You’ll need a buoy or other approved marking device to:
Mark the trap location
Secure the line
Make retrieval easy
Attach your line securely to the trap and buoy so it can handle current, tide movement, and pulls without slipping.

3) Choose Your Bait + Load the Bait Well
All OceanBuilt™ crab traps include a heavy-duty, full length, Quick Flip Bait Well for fast loading and secure baiting.
Popular crab baits:
Chicken necks / chicken backs
Oily fish (mullet, menhaden/bunker, etc.)
Fish carcasses or fish scraps
Cut bait / leftover baitfish
Tip: Pack it full. More bait = stronger scent trail = better pull. Keep bait secured in the bait well so crabs can’t steal it quickly through the mesh.
4) Check Tides + Pick Your Soak Time
Crabbing is best when water is moving. Check the tides and plan your set around tide changes when possible.
Soak time: We recommend overnight for the most consistent results. (Conditions vary—adjust based on your location, current, and local rules.)
