Crab trap doors take a beating. Between constant tension, saltwater exposure, and repeated opening and closing, worn bungees and loose closures are one of the most common reasons a trap stops performing the way it should.

The good news: most crab trap door issues can be fixed in just a few minutes with basic replacement parts.

Common Signs Your Crab Trap Door Needs Repair

If you notice any of the following, it’s time for a quick repair:

  • The door won’t stay fully closed

  • Bungees look stretched, frayed, or brittle

  • The door opens too easily when lifted

  • Catch rates have dropped for no obvious reason

These problems usually point to worn bungee cords or damaged door hardware.

What You’ll Need

  • Pre-cut bungee cord(s)

  • Replacement trap hook (if needed)

  • Stainless steel hog rings

  • Handheld c ring pliers or a pneumatic hog ring gun

  • Pliers (optional)

Using pre-cut bungees makes the process faster and ensures consistent tension once installed.

Step 1: Remove the Worn Bungee

Carefully unhook or cut away the old bungee cord. If the cord has lost elasticity, don’t try to reuse it — worn bungees won’t hold proper tension and can cause doors to pop open. Inspect the door frame and attachment points while the bungee is removed.

Step 2: Inspect the Trap Door and Hook

Check for:

  • Bent or cracked hooks

  • Sharp edges that could wear new bungees prematurely

  • Loose attachment points

Replace any damaged hooks before installing a new bungee.

Step 3: Install the New Pre-Cut Bungee

Attach one end of the pre-cut bungee to the trap frame using your hog rings, be generous here 2-3 rings per side, then stretch it to the opposite side with the hook in the center. Secure the other end of the bungee in the same fashion. The door should feel firm but still open smoothly when pulled. Proper tension is key — too loose and the door won’t hold, too tight and components will wear faster.

Your lid should look something like this:

Step 4: Test Before Setting

Open and close the door several times. Lift the trap slightly to simulate movement. The door should remain closed under normal handling.

Once satisfied, your trap is ready to go back in the water.

Stay Ahead of Trap Issues

Most trap failures happen gradually. A quick bungee replacement can prevent lost catch, wasted trips, and unnecessary frustration.

Keeping spare bungees on hand makes it easy to fix issues as soon as they appear.
