Terrapin Excluder Devices (TEDs) for Crab Traps: What You Need to Know

  • 2 min read

When it comes to crab trap regulations, the term TED can be confusing. In crabbing, TEDs are Terrapin Excluder Devices, not Turtle Excluder Devices used in shrimp trawling.

Terrapin Excluder Devices are used on crab traps to prevent diamondback terrapins from entering traps while still allowing blue crabs to move freely.

What Is a Terrapin Excluder Device (TED)?

A Terrapin Excluder Device is a rigid opening or frame installed over a crab trap entrance. Its purpose is simple:

  • Allow blue crabs to enter normally

  • Prevent diamondback terrapins from entering

  • Reduce accidental terrapin mortality

Terrapins are air-breathing reptiles and can drown if trapped underwater for extended periods, which is why TEDs are required in certain regions.

Why Terrapin Excluder Devices Are Required

Diamondback terrapins are a protected species in many coastal areas. Crab traps set in shallow or marshy waters can unintentionally capture terrapins, especially in tidal creeks and estuaries.

TED requirements exist to:

  • Protect terrapin populations

  • Reduce bycatch in crab fisheries

  • Allow crabbing in sensitive habitats

  • Support conservation without significantly impacting crab catch

TED Size Requirements Vary by State

Terrapin Excluder Device (TED) size requirements are not universal. Each state sets its own specifications based on local terrapin populations, habitats, and fisheries management goals.

Because of this, it’s important to confirm the exact TED size required before setting traps. All OceanBuilt crab traps come equipped with Florida Legal 2" by 6" TEDs on every throat.

Terrapin Excluder Devices for Crab Traps:

Terrapin Excluder Devices are typically:

  • Rigid frames or inserts

  • Installed at the trap entrance

  • Sized to block terrapins while allowing crabs through

The opening is designed so crabs pass through easily, but terrapins — which are wider and taller — cannot enter the trap.

TEDs vs Escape Rings (Different Purposes)

TEDs and escape rings are often confused, but they serve different roles:

  • Terrapin Excluder Devices (TEDs) prevent terrapins from entering traps

  • Escape rings or vents allow undersized crabs and small fish to exit

Depending on location, traps may be required to include one or both.

Maintaining TED Compliance

Over time, TEDs can become damaged, bent, or removed during use. It’s important to periodically inspect traps to ensure TEDs remain properly installed and unobstructed.

For maintenance or retrofitting, OceanBuilt offers packs of Terrapin Excluder Devices that can be used for repairs or for adding TEDs to existing traps.

Responsible Crabbing Starts with the Right Gear

Terrapin Excluder Devices are a small but important part of responsible crabbing. Using traps equipped with proper TEDs helps protect diamondback terrapins, keeps you compliant, and supports sustainable crabbing practices.
